Mini backyard glow-ups: Small spring updates that make a big impact

Dreaming of green during the bleak winter months? Don’t despair, spring is truly just around the corner and before you know it, your landscaping pros will be sprucing up your yard for summer with your annual spring cleanup.

If you recently did a backyard renovation, or you already love your yard but have a short wishlist to make it perfect, consider adding a short honey-do list to your spring cleanup chores. In other words… a mini backyard glow-up!

After a long winter, yards often show signs of wear with bare spots, damaged shrubs, and garden beds that feel tired or unfinished. Spring is more than just a clean up season; it’s the perfect opportunity to reset your space and add small upgrades that deliver big visual results.

Plant now, build later.

With ideal conditions for landscaping improvements, springtime (not summer) is a great time to plant. The cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall help set new plants up for success in their new environment. Plants installed in spring have months to establish strong roots before the heat of summer arrives. Waiting until summer can mean higher stress for plants and more maintenance for you.

Summer, on the other hand, is better suited for construction projects like patios, walkways, and retaining walls. Save it all for the summertime and focus on getting your outdoor space ready for when the time comes to put in a new deck.

Spring planting is one of the easiest and most effective ways to refresh your backyard. Even just a few tweaks can dramatically improve the look and feel of your space, such as:

  • Replacing shrubs that didn’t survive winter
  • Filling in last year’s bare spots with new perennials
  • Adding shade and privacy to your family’s safe haven with new trees
  • Softening hard edges with greenery

Winter can be tough on lawns and beds. Bare or thinning areas don’t just affect appearance, but can lead to erosion, weed growth, and uneven drainage. Spring is the time to fill empty or thin garden beds and take care of bare spots before they turn into bigger problems.

Mulch once!

Mulching is one of the most underrated glow-up tools. Not only does it instantly create a cleaner look to your yard, but mulch also locks in moisture, suppresses weeds, and regulates soil temperature.

Before your mulching team arrives, take a moment to think through any plants or additions you want to include in your beds. Planning ahead ensures everything gets planted first and avoids the extra mess of your hardworking team needing to dig up that freshly laid mulch. It’s a more thorough plan to keep your yard intact and your landscaping looking put together.

Do it all during a spring cleanup.

If you’re already scheduling a spring cleanup, you’re halfway to a better-looking landscape. A few smart additions that address your specific post-winter needs will make your routine seasonal cleanup feel like a total backyard refresh.

One of the biggest advantages of turning a spring cleanup into a mini backyard glow-up is efficiency. The crew is already there. The equipment is already on-site. Everything gets done in one visit instead of multiple appointments. This approach saves you time, reduces scheduling headaches, and often lowers overall costs.

Small changes, big difference.

Mini backyard glow-ups can transform your outdoor space without a full overhaul just by working a bit smarter. Identifying a few targeted improvements, thoughtful planting, and proper mulching lead to a refreshed and ready-to-go outdoor space. These changes create a fuller, healthier landscape that looks better all season long.
