Heath Outdoor Returns to its Westside Roots

Heath Outdoor Returns to its Westside Roots

Heath Outdoor began on the Westside of Indianapolis, in Eagle Creek, in 2009. It started out as one guy and a lawnmower. That guy was Heath Hurst, who had lived in the neighborhood since 1996–he knew his market. He began mowing lawns for his neighbors, and when they asked him if he could do more than mow, he said yes. Plant some trees? Sure. Rake some leaves? Can do. Pretty soon, he needed help, so he recruited some buddies. He and his small but mighty team continued to find ways to say yes to their customers, and the company grew. And grew.

Today, Heath Outdoor is a full-service landscaping company nearly one hundred employees strong. But as the company grew, Hurst stayed true to his Westside, good neighbor roots.

“Heath Outdoor is founded on one simple philosophy,” said Hurst. “Always do the right thing. Community is incredibly important to me and I always want to be a good neighbor. Our family lived in Greencastle for many years and we’ve gradually worked our way towards the center of Indy. My family lives in Cottage Home now, and I’ve found that same good neighbor vibe on the Eastside. We look after each other.”

In 2017, Heath’s brother Travis Hurst joined the company, bringing his expertise in technology and sales.

“I’m a Westsider through and through,” said Travis. “We just built a home in Pittsboro, and prior to that we were in Brownsburg. I love these communities and I get involved in every way I can.”

Because Heath and Travis both have roots on the Westside, it made sense to them to eventually return their operations there. In 2022, they bought a five-acre piece of land in the 2400 block of West Morris Street, previously home to Butler’s Flowers and Plants. Along with the land, they bought four existing homes, three of which now house the Heath Outdoor sales, accounting and support teams.

The current headquarters of Heath Outdoor are located in the North Mass (NoMa) neighborhood, just north of the Bottleworks District in downtown Indy. The Hurst brothers are developing this one-acre property into a new retail, dining and event space called The Yard at North Mass. It’s currently home to DIGS Garden Center and The Green Room event space, and in Spring, 2025, The Yard Bar and South Monon Spirits Distillery will open there as well.

As soon as final permitting is secured, the Heath Outdoor team will finish construction on three structures on the West Morris property– an operations building, a maintenance building and an office/retail/meeting space. Once building is complete, all Heath Outdoor operations will be based in this Westside location.

“We’ve joined the Westside Chamber of Commerce and we’ve already met some great people there,” said Heath. “We’re also looking for ways to get involved in and support the West Indy Development Corporation. We’re excited to immerse ourselves in the Westside business community and get acquainted with our new neighbors, in 2025, and for many years to come.”
